Working in partnership is identified as a key priority in theory, policy and practice related to reducing child poverty, mitigating the broader impacts and closing the poverty related attainment gap.

The 1 in 5: Raising Awareness of Child Poverty Project invites colleagues from education, social care, health and the third sector to its annual conference which this year will focus on partnership working. Throughout the day there will be the opportunity for networking and discussion, while also hearing from speakers highlighting research, policy and practice. As 1 in 5 enters its 4th year, many schools have now embedded the training, workshops and poverty proofing practices whilst others are only just starting up. The introduction of PEF and the statutory obligation on health boards and local authorities to develop a Child Poverty Plan bring added impetus to what can be achieved. This conference will be an opportunity to take stock of how far 1 in 5 has come as well as explore across sectors how we, as a City, can continue to work together to address child poverty head on.

Speakers and inputs confirmed to date include:

  • Dr Jim McCormick Associate Director Scotland at Joseph Rowntree Foundation and chair of Edinburgh’s Poverty Commission
  • Dr William Mason Lecturer in Applied Social Services at Sheffield University who will present on the Nuffield-funded Child Welfare Inequalities Project. This UK wide comparative study explores child welfare interventions in relation to poverty and inequality, with Edinburgh being one of the test sites for the study
  • Practice examples of effective partnership working in 1 in 5 schools and communities
  • Launch of the new 1 in 5 ‘Talking About Money Matters’ film for staff and updated ‘Financial Support and Information’ booklet

This conference is for all those working across sectors in Edinburgh to support families who are experiencing poverty. Book now to avoid disappointment.

Registration will commence from 8.30am, with the conference presentations starting at 9am.
